Catholics encounter Scripture during Sunday Mass. On most Sundays, four Scripture passages are proclaimed or sung: an Old Testament reading, a Responsorial Psalm, a New Testament passage (usually from Paul), and a passage from one of the Gospels. During weekday Masses, there is a similar pattern, except there are only three readings.
How did this pattern develop?
Why are certain passages read and not others?
How do the three or four readings relate to one another?
The Bible in the Lectionary will consider these and other questions.
